Starbucks® Espresso Roast

Every espresso beverage we handcraft for you begins right here. Our master roasters coax the beans along, the heat taking them deep and dark—a recipe for caramelly sweetness so right it’s never been changed. The quest began in 1975 with a search for the perfect melding of beans and roast, ending months of intense experimentation later with the coffee you’re holding in your hand. A blend of beans from Latin America and Asia / Pacific, roasted the way only we can.

A Better Cup

We're committed to ethically sourcing and roasting the highest-quality arabica coffee in the world. When we buy coffee this way, it fosters a better future for farmers, and a more stable climate for the planet. It also helps create a long-term supply of the high-quality beans we've been carefully blending, roasting and packing fresh for more than 40 years.

Recipe for great coffee

  1. Use cold, filtered water and a clean machine.
  2. Grind beans just before brewing:
    • Coarse for coffee press
    • Medium for automatic drip
  3. Measure 10 g (2 tbsp) ground coffee for every 180 ml (6 fl oz) water.

To help preserve that fresh flavour, keep this bag sealed tight in a cabinet (not in the refrigerator) and brew within a week of opening.

Each coffee requires slightly different amounts of time and temperature during the roasting process to create a cup at its peak of aroma, acidity, body and flavour. We classify our coffees in three roast profiles so you can easily find your desired flavour and intensity.

  • Blonde: Blonde-roasted coffees have a shorter roast time, lighter body and mellow flavours.
  • Medium: Medium-roasted coffees are balanced with smooth and rich flavours.
  • Dark: Dark-roasted coffees feature a fuller body and robust, bold flavours.

Espresso Dark Roast

By Wintergreen

from Toronto

Comments about Starbucks Espresso Roast, Whole Bean:

If there was a star rating less then one I would have clicked it. This espresso roast I purchased and was recommended by your store is lowest standard of espresso I have ever had! This is not espresso! I will be returning the empty bag tomorrow. The remainder of beans I will use to keep the mice and and spiders from entering my greenhouse this spring. Yes, I will lodge my complaints to this store as well! I was told by a friend to try Kicking Horse coffee next. This Starbucks dark roast has not the aroma, taste and satisfaction I would have expected in a company that prides itself on Coffee!

Comments about Starbucks Espresso Roast, Whole Bean:

I love the taste of pure, strong bold coffee and these beans and wonderful. I grind them just before brewing in my Moka pot on the stove. I don't get the 'crema' foam like with professional espresso machines but its the next best thing. This coffee definately has a rich caramel flavour and satisfying aroma.

I love Americano. So this is a perfect roast for the espresso machine at home. My day starts with it.

Our 'go to' Espresso Bean

By GK2006

from Edmonton, AB, Canada

Comments about Starbucks Espresso Roast, Whole Bean:

We have not tried a great number of other products but that is largely because we tried this to start with and loved it completely. We did try a few others since to get a sense of the cost was effective or not and the experience just wasn't worth it. We may try other options again in the future but we are absolutely thrilled with this product!

Comments about Starbucks Espresso Roast, Whole Bean:

I serve this expresso roast coffee every morning to our B&B guests. This is the only coffee my husband and I will drink in the morning. I grind the beans myself for a fresh brew each morning. Our guests always comment on the excellent coffee we serve.
Thanks Starbucks

Good all rounder, best for both hot and iced drinks.

By TheManFromToronto

from Toronto, ON, Canada

Comments about Starbucks Espresso Roast, Whole Bean:

I have tried many coffee beans from Starbucks and this Espresso Roast is the best one I recommend.

These are the same beans they use in the store to make the espresso based drinks, like Americano, Iced Americano, etc.

It tastes amazing for both hot and iced drinks.

Tip: I suggest you use a good burr grinder and grind these beans fresh right before making your drink for best result every time. Use filtered water and store the beans away from light.
